Well- not even a full day of potty training and I'm already giving up. For those of you who know me- you know I always try things too early (switching to a twin bed before Carter was ready). And I guess this was one of those things too. I just thought he could do it. Here's the problem- he knows how to hold it (which is pretty much what he did all day), and he knows how to go (which happened twice in the toilet.) but he just doesn't want to. And I don't know HOW to make a kid go to the bathroom when he doesn't WANT to! Is this normal?! We spent countless times on the toilet singing songs, talking about all the other "big boys" who also go to the potty on the toilet, played with the toilet paper holder, made our pooping faces (in an effort to help him push), and tried to aim into the toilet (which isn't natural for a boy sitting down), all this while Brady watched- (Carter was pretty excited to show Brady how big he was... for about 5 seconds.)
So ANYWAY, after about 5 cups of juice, and a concerned Carter playing uncomfortably, and trying really hard to hold it as long as he could- I decided to put the diaper back on. AND he went. Aaahhh... relief for him. Frustration for me. I guess that's what I get for starting too early.

Oh Molly! :) I know your pain.
A thought... are you using incentives (otherwise known as candy? haha) For awhile we were giving Maddie starbursts as her potty treat, but then she went through a stage where she was crying on the potty and not wanting to go. I tried dum dums instead and she wanted them so bad she would go just to have one! It helps develop the habit.
I am learning that she'll take her own time. Accidents happen (still daily) but she learns from them and gets better. It sounds like Carter understands the concept and after a few successful tries he might get excited! It's all about making it fun.
When I tried to Potty Train Saylor we had kind of the same experience. She was more than capable of doing it but just didn't want to. So after a lot of frustration and tears (mostly mine) I decided to stop trying until she was ready. A few months later she was like "Where is my potty?" and that was the end of diapers. It makes it so much easier when they are not only ready but willing. Good Luck.
It's not too early! Ashtyn took FOREVER to potty train. She was the same way with not WANTING to go. Finally we just hid her diapers, then she started going in the potty, but she was 3 1/2 years old!!
With Kai, we would put a cheerio or a fruit loop in the toilet and tell him to aim for it. It worked like a charm! :)
potty training can be a nightmare! but i learned to just relax and try not to get too stressed out because everyone gets it eventually! good luck.
Don't give up completely yet. Just keep giving it a try every now and then to keep the idea in his mind and one day he'll decide that he's really ready. It's a huge change for him so he needs to warm up to the idea.
